When the first teaser for Marvel’s upcoming–and aptly titled–movie The Marvels was unveiled on April 11th, it was met with…well, just about what you’d expect. Just one week after The Marvels teaser hit YouTube, it’s looking to be the studio’s most disliked trailer yet.

As of publication, The Marvels teaser has 623,000 dislikes, or 56% of the 1,111,000 votes. Meanwhile, on our own YouTube channel, where dislikes of The Marvels teaser make up 83% of the reactions. Now, these aren’t “Baby Shark” numbers, but it could be a strong indication that some trolling is afoot, with some citing misogynistic attitudes as the main culprit.

Just to compare some numbers, let’s look at two other 2023 Marvel movies: the latest trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has just 5,600 dislikes out of 13 million views, while Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania had a bit more stinging 29,000 dislikes. The Marvels flying so quickly to the lead of most YouTube dislikes in any MCU entry could be an indication that, yes, the movie looks bad–after all, its predecessor, Captain Marvel, only had a 45% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to the “certified fresh” critic score of 79%. But it wouldn’t be shocking at all if the troll community was up to their usual tricks.

Trolling seems embedded in the Captain Marvel-centric movies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Regarding that, then-Marvel executive Victoria Alonso urged any naysayers of 2019’s Captain Marvel to give the movie a shot, saying, “We were aware that there were people that were not ready or perhaps not welcoming of the film but it never interfered with the story line or our vision of the film…But we hope they give us a chance and see the film before they finalize their opinions…” Right, because that’s how the internet works! (It might be worth noting that Alonso would later be fired, with many citing her tendencies towards a toxic work environment.)

The Marvels comes to theaters on November 10th.
