Castlevania spin-off probably won’t be Symphony of the Night, says producer

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

So with Netflix's popular anime adaptation of the iconic action-horror video game franchise Castlevania coming to an end after four seasons – and news that spin-offs are on the way – the question becomes: what's next?

Well, Comingsoon.net recently sat down for an exclusive interview with series executive producer Kevin Kolde, who didn't have much answers for what the spin-offs will be based on, but he was pretty clear about what they won't be based on: namely, popular entry Symphony of the Night.

He explains why below:

So I really liked Symphony of the Night as a game, right? I think that that’s where it starts. I think it’s a classic Castlevania game…Symphony of the Night from a story standpoint is an interesting challenge in that in Symphony of the Night, Alucard has to fight his dad. Right? We did that in Season 2. So I’m not sure how you do that again from a storytelling standpoint and make it meaningful. So there would be challenges to that particular story, but there are other elements to it that are interesting. The Richter [Belmont] element, the Maria [Renard] element that you could look at, but the ultimate fight between Alucard and Dracula, I don’t know how we would do it better than we did in Season 2, to be honest with you.

That's kind of a bummer, but I see Kolde's point. You don't want to retread plot points like that, especially if they were already done meaningfully in the show already. Best case scenario, as he said, is them taking plot elements and characters from that game that haven't been explored yet into an original story (similar to the mix-and-matching of plot elements from the current series, which was ostensibly based on Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, but borrowed plot elements from other games in the series as well). But we'll see what they do. I'm personally willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Meanwhile, the fourth – and final – season of Castlevania is out on Netflix right now!

But what do you guys think? And what would you like to see a Castlevania spin-off be? Either way, sound off belo!
