Deadline has learned that Charlie Hunnam is in talks for the lead role in a remake of PAPILLON. Hunnam is being eyed to take on Steve McQueen's role in the classic prison escape flick as a man "unjustly convicted of murder in 1930s France and condemned to life in a South American prison." Papillon is aided by a counterfeiter (played by Dustin Hoffman in the original 1973 movie) "who finances his prison escapes in exchange for protection in prison."

THE WOLF OF WALL STREET producers Red Granite are behind the remake, and Danish filmmaker Michael Noer (NORTHWEST, R) is attached to direct it from a script by PRISONERS screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski. According to the site, the plan is start production on the film this fall. Who would you like to see star alongside Hunnam as the counterfeiter in Red Granites' PAPILLON?

Hunnam recently finished shooting for Guy Ritchie's KNIGHTS OF THE ROUNDTABLE: KING ARTHUR for its March 24, 2017 release, and he also stars in director James Gray's upcoming adaptation of THE LOST CITY OF Z, which is expected to hit theaters sometime later this year.
