Charlize Theron has signed on to star alongside Viggo Mortensen in the upcoming adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s THE ROAD. In one of the biggest Oscar bait roles ever, Theron will star as Mortensen’s 9-year-old son in the — wait, what? Oh, I just made that up? Sorry, but I didn’t think there was a decent female part in THE ROAD. As it turns out Theron will play a bit part; that of the late wife of Mortensen who will only be seen in flashbacks. Theron took the role because she’s a huge fan of the book and producer Nick Wechsler worked with her before on THE YARDS. Dimension Films is distributing the project, which means it could fall into the same void that FANBOYS is in and we could never see it. John Hillcoat is directing the McCarthy adaptation from a script by Joe Penhall. Filming is scheduled to begin next month.
