Christina Applegate “highly doubts” that there will be an Anchorman 3

Recently while chatting with Pete Hammond for Deadline's video interview show The Actor's Side, DEAD TO ME and DON'T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER'S DEAD actress Christina Applegate opened up about the possibility of there ever being a third installment of the Will Ferrell-led comedy film franchise ANCHORMAN. Actually, that's a bit misleading, what I really should have said is that Applegate, who played Veronica Corningstone for both the 2004 original ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY and its 2013 sequel, ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES, "highly doubts" that we'll ever get another chapter of the kooky comedy.

During the interview, Hammond remarked about the early aspects of Applegate's career, and how she shined as the blonde badass, Kelly Bundy, for the MARRIED WITH CHILDREN television series, in addition to her ANCHORMAN role. When asked if she knew that ANCHORMAN would resonate with audiences the way it did, Applegate replied:

"No. We really had no idea. That was [Adam] McKay's first movie that he directed and Will had not starred in anything since SNL, so no one really knew what was going to happen. It actually didn't do well on its opening weekend. It was really one of those things that grew once it was out of theaters and on cable or VHS. I believe you could still get a VHS back in 2004. It then grew into a cult classic."

Hammond then stated that he's hoping there will eventually be an ANCHORMAN 3, to which Applegate said, "I highly doubt it, at this point. Now that McKay has got some Oscars on his shelf I don't know if we're going to go back and revisit Anchorman. I would never say never, though. Honestly, working with those boys is the highlight of my life. My boys were the most genuine, incredible, respectful, just … talented group of dudes."

There you have it, folks. While it's not a "never," it certainly does sound as if you can prepare a Scotch to be poured out for your ANCHORMAN sequel hopes. I'm sorry. I know this is a really shitty addition to your day, but hey, I'm sure there's a lamp nearby that could use some of your lovin'.

As for Applegate, she's preparing to star alongside Linda Cardellini for the upcoming Netflix series DEAD TO ME. In the dark and comedic drama, two women who discover a friendship unlike any they've ever had, though a dark secret will soon soon divide them, lest they can reconcile their differences on their way toward closure and forgiveness.

Here's the official synopsis for DEAD TO ME:

Jen (Christina Applegate) is a sardonic widow determined to solve her husband’s recent hit-and-run murder. Judy (Linda Cardellini) is an optimistic free spirit who’s recently suffered her own tragic loss. When the two women meet at a support group, they become unlikely friends despite their polar-opposite personalities. But as they bond over bottles of wine, Entenmann’s cookies and a shared affinity for The Facts of Life, Judy desperately tries to shield Jen from a shocking secret that could destroy her life as she knows it. Dead to Me, created by Liz Feldman (2 Broke Girls, One Big Happy), is an addictive dark comedy that dives into the painfully unfiltered, weirdly funny waters of grief, loss and forgiveness.

DEAD TO ME will launch globally on Netflix Friday, May 3rd.
