Lucile Hadzihalilovic's upcoming flick EVOLUTION looks like it will be another stunning European entry in the genre, the likes of which we've been getting a bunch of lately. A new clip has been fished out from the film, depicting a boys' field trip to the seaside and the horrible mutilation of a starfish. This actually reminds me a lot of a scene from LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, in which an ice skating trip descends into violence between a bully and his victim. They're not exactly the same, but they both create an uncanny eeriness with a set of young boys. Check it out below and see for yourself!
Hadzihalilovic wrote the screenplay with Alanté Kavaïté and Geoff Cox, about:
ten-year-old Nicolas, who lives in a remote seaside village populated only by boys his age and adult women. When he makes a disturbing discovery beneath the ocean waves — a dead boy with a red starfish on his stomach — Nicolas begins to question everything about his existence. What are the half-remembered images he recalls, as if from another life? If the woman he lives with is not his mother, then who is she? And what awaits the boys when they are all suddenly confined to a hospital?
