Modern Family’s Ty Burrell is Developing a Coach Reboot at NBC

Let’s get Ty Burrell a whistle and a clipboard, because the Modern Family alum is developing a reboot of the hit 1990s sitcom Coach. Burrell is on the ground floor of the reimagining, with writers/exec producers Matthew Libman and Daniel Libman (Happy Endings, Mr. Throwback).

The project is being set up at NBC, with Burrell eyeing the lead role, though the part has yet to be cast. While Burrell isn’t a lock, he’ll executive produce the reboot alongside John Fox and John Davis.

“A legendary coach returns home to Minnesota to rebuild his alma mater’s basketball program and reconnect with his community,” reads the official logline (notably flipping the sport from the original’s gridiron to the hardwood court).

Returning to Minnesota State

Back in the golden era of prime-time network television, before prestige cable and streaming algorithms diluted the waters, ABC hit paydirt with a sitcom anchored in a surprisingly specific subculture: college football in the Heartland. Running for nine seasons from 1989 through 1997, Coach was a staple of Tuesday night lineups, carving out a massive audience by pairing locker-room bluster with genuine, character-driven heart.

Created by Barry Kemp (Taxi, Newhart), the series revolved around Hayden Fox (played with pitch-perfect gruff by Craig T. Nelson), the head coach of the fictional Minnesota State University Screaming Eagles. Hayden was a throwback, a stubborn, traditional man’s man whose life revolved entirely around the field, playbook strategy, and the sacred turf of Minnesota State.

Passing the Whistle to Phil Dunphy

Best known for his Emmy-winning role as Phil Dunphy on Modern Family, Ty Burrell feels like a perfect fit to take to the field for a Coach reboot. I’ll be disappointed if they cast someone else.

A Win for Nostalgia

I was never an avid watcher of the original series, but I knew many people who enjoyed it, and my dad was a big sports fan. Every so often, I’d catch him watching episodes of Coach, barking with laughter and reminiscing about his high school football days. He was a big shot. Four touchdowns in one game, the works. Very Al Bundy. I’m sure he’d be thrilled to know Coach is coming back for a new generation of fans.
