After years of circling the project, Sacha Baron Cohen is expected to next star in DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS, a remake of the French comedy LE DINER DE CONS. Jay Roach (MEET THE PARENTS) will direct the project about a man who exudes such “extraordinary schmuckiness” that he destroys the personal life of anyone he comes in contact with. He is brought to a dinner party when the host issues a challenge to the guest to bring the biggest loser as a guest. The film would reteam Cohen with DreamWorks and producers Walter Parkes and Laurie McDonald for whom he just worked on SWEENEY TODD. Because deals on SCHMUCKS haven’t officially closed, it’s not clear when the project would begin filming but DreamWorks obviously wants it to begin before the impending writers’ strike next June. Cohen is currently filming BRUNO on the down low in Los Angeles for Universal. Roach is working on the documentary RECOUNT about the 2000 presidential election for HBO.
