Coming 2 America release date confirmed by Amazon

The acquisition of COMING 2 AMERICA, the sequel to the hit Eddie Murphy comedy COMING TO AMERICA, made big news when Amazon nabbed the highly-anticipated film from Paramount Pictures for $125 million, and now the streaming service has confirmed when we will get to see Murphy as Akeem once again.

COMING 2 AMERICA will hit Amazon Prime Video on March 5, 2021. The film was originally going to hit screens on December 18, 2020, via Paramount Pictures but the COVID-19 pandemic has caused many studios to seek out other options to release their films and, in the case of Paramount Pictures, that means selling them off to other entities. When it was all said and done, Paramount released the film to Amazon for $125 million in a global rights deal.

The COMING 2 AMERICA deal makes this the second huge comedic acquisition for Amazon. Studio boss Jennifer Salke also helped secure the deal for BORAT SUBSEQUENT MOVIE FILM which was watched by "tens of millions of viewers" according to Amazon in its first week on the service. Since COMING 2 AMERICA has been highly anticipated by fans, the same success could be awaiting that film when it becomes available in over 240 countries and territories. Here is what Salke had to say about acquiring COMING 2 AMERICA:

Directed by Craig Brewer, COMING 2 AMERICA finds Akeem (Murphy) learning that he has a long-lost son in the United States and now he must return to America to meet the unlikely heir to the throne of Zamunda. Penned by Kenya Barris, Barry W. Blaustein, and David Sheffield, with story by Blaustein, David Sheffield, and Justin Kanew, the film also stars Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, Shari Headley, Louie Anderson, John Amos, Wesley Snipes, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, Jermaine Fowler, Bella Murphy, Rotimi, KiKi Layne, Nomzamo Mbatha and Teyana Taylor.
