Since the Cannes film festival is currently in full boogie-down mode in France, ’tis the season for lots of films to find distribution deals, as well as publicity re: their very existence. One such movie is called DIAGNOSIS DEATH, and good god, I’m glad to have heard about this one. Apparently, Lighting Media was too, as they acquired the U.S. distribution rights to the flick.
So why does this news fill me with such glee? Well, I happen to be a very, very big fan of the great t.v. series “FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS” as well as the band, “Flight of the Conchords” (a.k.a. the New Zealand-born duo of Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie). And it just so happens that DIAGNOSIS DEATH stars both Clement and McKenzie, who play “themselves” on the HBO series, as well as Rhys Darby, whom fans of the show know as “Murray”, the Conchords’ sweet-natured and hapless manager.
So what’s DIAGNOSIS DEATH about? It’s about two people undergoing a radical treatment for cancer. Locked in a medical facility over a weekend as guinea pigs for a drug trial, they discover the clinic may pose more harm than they could have imagined. The drugs cause hallucinations. Or are they seeing ghosts for real? Struggling with their senses, they must team up to solve a haunting secret.
The film also stars Raybon Kan, Jessica Grace Smith, and Suze Tye, and comes from director Jason Stutter. Lightning Media plans on releasing it either later this year or early 2010. Naturally, we’ll keep you posted!
