Cool Videos: Low-budget sci-fi short Arrowhead: Signal shows some serious promise

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Today’s young filmmakers have a lot of resources that weren’t available even ten years ago.  HD cameras, digital effects on your home computer, sound editing software, etc.  However, the one thing that can’t be bought is the passion for the craft.  You can have all the tools in the world, but if your heart’s not in it, then it’s worthless.  The Australian filmmakers behind ARROWHEAD: SIGNAL, a sci-fi indie short, show that they have more than enough gusto for what they’re doing.  The short serves as a companion piece to the larger film they’re attempting to make.

The short is full of the small moments in a sci-fi feature that we don’t see enough of.  Similar to MOON, it features the “man stranded alone” scenario on a distant planet, and capitalizes on keeping our interest with sharp technical skill, a fitting score, and muted, realistic effects.  I will always support young filmmakers who are busting their asses to make a film they believe in and these guys are the real deal.

The filmmakers are using Pozible to raise funds for the feature and have an interesting twist to the campaign.  By donating to the film, you’ll actually be made part of the decision-making process for the film, by being able to vote on designs, characters, creatures, etc., and help influence what will be shot.  Check out this short introduction from the director and pledge a few bucks if you think it’s worthy.  I think it’s truly awesome that young filmmakers have these tools to use today and I think it can really help open doors previously shut for the community as a whole.
