Cool Videos: Mario Kart 7 commercial makes me long for a Mario Kart movie

This may not be one of the most particularly “cool” statements in the wake of releases like “Skyrim,” “Modern Warfare 3” and “Battlefield 3” but I’m still really excited about the releases of both “The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword” and “Mario Kart 7.” Nintendo may not be the coolest game developers but with their core titles, they always deliver.

The Mario Kart series has always been a favorite of mine and sadly the new “Mario Kart 7” is only on the 3DS but watching this new ad for the game, I’m thinking that Mario Kart could make another 3D leap – to movies. While there is a good deal of CGI in this spot, the actual karts you see are real, actually work and were actually driven by actors. At the end, when the Mario kid hits the ramp, they actually hooked that kart up to a cable and launched it off the ramp. Now that’s cool.

I know the last Mario Brothers movie was horrendous but that’s because the game’s have a fairly nonsensical plot. But if you’re going to try again with a Mario movie, shouldn’t it be some weird mix of CANNONBALL RUN, THE HUNGER GAMES and SPEED RACER? That, I’d pay to see. Check out the new spot below and let me know what you think.
