Late last night, after making its Comic-Con debut, the social embargo for Coyote vs. Acme was lifted. Many journalists, including myself, saw the film in early June, so we’ve been holding our excitement in for literal months. Full reviews are still a ways out, but for now, we can finally give our initial impressions of the movie!
In Coyote vs. Acme, Wile E. Coyote decides he’s taken enough abuse from the Acme corporation and their catalog of faulty products, so he enlists the help of an “ambulance chasing” lawyer to sue the company for all its worth.
WB vs. Coyote vs. Acme
As you’re likely to know, Coyote vs. Acme has been put through the wringer on its way to release. As part of a move to get itself out of some hot water, Warner Bros. Discovery initially canceled Coyote vs. Acme alongside DC’s Batgirl as part of a tax write-off, with executives saying the $30 million impairment charge was worth more than the cost of marketing and theatrical real estate. WB’s decision angered film fans worldwide, making the studio a target for negative press. Many speculated that WB vaulted the film because of its plot, which takes corporations like WB to task, making them look greedy, soulless, and corrupt. Following the backlash, Ketchup Entertainment swooped in and purchased the film from WB, effectively saving it from being mothballed for eternity.
Coyote vs. Acme is a total blast
With the film officially saved, screeners went out to publications across the entertainment spectrum, and many have flocked to social media to share their first spoiler-free impressions. The vast majority of reactions to the movie are glowing, as they should be, with many critics agreeing that Coyote vs. Acme should have never been in danger of not reaching screens. The movie seamlessly blends animation with live-action actors for a Who Framed Roger Rabbit-like presentation that looks fantastic. The film is laugh-out-loud funny, with plenty of Looney Tunes antics, Easter eggs, and character cameos throughout. It’s impossible to spot all the guest characters in one watch. I tried to keep count and failed miserably. Even if you think a character didn’t make the cut, look closer—they’re probably in there somewhere.
