Variety is reporting some sad, and downright bizarre, news this morning involving writer / director Stephen Norrington (BLADE) and the classic goth adventure THE CROW, from director Alex Proyas. It appears as though Norrington, through Relativity Media, is going to bring a new version of THE CROW to the big screen. Say whaaaat???
Of course, they’re not calling it a remake, they’re calling it a “reinvention” of the story and character, which was originally based on the graphic novel of the same name created by James O’Barr. Any way you slice it, they’re remaking THE CROW and there’s nothing we can do about it. Boo!
But wait, it gets better. Here’s what Norrington, who hasn’t made a movie since The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen back in 2003, has to say about the project: Whereas Proyas’ original was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie will be realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style.
I think he just said, whereas the original had style, mine will not, but look like something you’d shoot with a video camera. Ah, I see… so wait, what’s the point of remaking this? Why belittle a classic of the mid-90s, a movie that holds up strong after 15 years? Has the whole world gone crazy???
No word on when Norrington will begin production, as I’m not 100% sure that he’s written the script yet. Now the big question is, who will play The Crow in the new version? Stick around for more on this abomination as we hear it.
