Cruella: Non-premium Disney+ premiere date confirmed

Cruella starring Emma Stone as the classic Disney villain will stream for all Disney+ subscribers beginning on Friday

Disney+ dropped a new teaser trailer for Cruella today as a way of celebrating the film’s non-Premier Access arrival on the mouse-eared streaming network. That’s right, dog lovers. The Queen of Mean is ready to share her hatred for dalmatian puppies with all Disney+ subscribers on Friday, August 27.

Originally, Disney’s Cruella was strictly meant for theaters but ended up being a simultaneous release in cinemas and on Disney+ Premier Access. For a brief time, rumors began circulating that Emma Stone was upset with the dual release plan for Cruella, and was mounting a lawsuit against Disney. However, instead of the situation turning into Scarlet Johansson: The Revenge, reports surfaced that Stone has recently signed on for a Cruella sequel. This being the case, I think it’s safe to assume that all is well in the twisted land of Disney’s villainous fashionista.

“While the media landscape has been disrupted in a meaningful way for all distributors, their creative partners cannot be left on the sidelines to carry a disproportionate amount of the downside without the potential for upside,” Endeavor Executive Chairman Patrick Whitsell said when the sequel was announced. “This agreement demonstrates that there can be an equitable path forward that protects artists and aligns studios’ interests with talent. We are proud to work alongside Emma and Disney, and appreciate the studio’s willingness to recognize her contributions as a creative partner. We are hopeful that this will open the door for more members of the creative community to participate in the success of new platforms.”

Here’s the official synopsis for Cruella:

Academy Award winner Emma Stone (“La La Land”) stars in Disney’s “Cruella,” an all-new live-action feature film about the rebellious early days of one of cinemas most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. “Cruella,” which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar winner Emma Thompson (“Howards End,” “Sense & Sensibility”). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable, and revenge-bent Cruella.

Cruella was helmed by Craig Gillespie from a screenplay by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara and based on a story by Aline Brosh McKenna and Kelly Marcel & Steve Zissis. The film stars Emma Stone, Emma Thompson, Paul Walter Hauser, Joel Fry, Emily Beecham, Mark Strong, and more.

I’m excited to check out Cruella when it’s made available for all Disney+ subscribers this Friday. The film received glowingly positive reviews upon its release and the price is finally right to dive in. Let’s go kidnap some dogs!
