Update: Just hours after the first images for Clint Eastwood's Cry Macho were released, Warner Bros. has dropped the first trailer for the neo-western. You can check that out above. If you're a fan of Eastwood's work in recent years, this looks pretty much on par with what's come before; plenty of gruff grunting and ruminating on what it means to be a man. That said, I'll definitely be watching.

Clint Eastwood has embraced plenty of looks throughout the years, but there's nothing quite like when he goes full-cowboy. If you like your Eastwood rugged, leathery, and always in the mood for some campfire cuisine, you're going to want to check out today's first-look images for Cry Macho.
Directed by and starring Eastwood, the Western thriller revolves around a one-time rodeo star and washed-up horse breeder who takes a job to bring a man's young son home and away from his alcoholic mom. On their journey, the horseman finds redemption by teaching the boy what it means to be a good man.
"It's about a man who has been through some hard times in his life and then unexpectedly another challenge is brought to the foreground," Eastwood tells Entertainment Weekly. "He would normally never do it but he is a man of his word. He follows through. And it starts his life over again."
EW debuted two first-look images today, each centering on the 91-year-old actor who's still making the most of his filmmaking career. The first photo depicts Eastwood looking whistful while wearing a sharp jacket and hat. Maybe it's a Stetson? The second photo is a bit more interesting, as it pairs Eastwood's character, Miko, with a friendly rooster. I hope the rooster joins Miko on his journey and doesn't end up becoming a hearty meal for the long road ahead.
Cry Macho is based on author N. Richard Nash's 1975 novel of the same name. Believe it or not, Nash has been trying to adapt the film to screen for almost that long. In fact, names like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Pierce Brosnan, and Burt Lancaster were once attached to star in the project. Even Eastwood's name was tossed into the ring during conversations that took place in 1988. It's wild to think that Cry Macho has traveled such a weathered road to the silver screen, and now it's set to premiere in theaters and on HBO Max on September 17th.
