Cumberbatch and Freeman go back in time in these new Sherlock stills

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

For you fans of BBC's Sherlock, you may have seen some pictures teasing an anachronistic return of Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman's John Watson. While season 4 won't hit until 2016, there will be a one-off special coming home this Christmas. Given that the series takes place in present-day London, these new images may leave some of you scratching your heads.

As you can see, Cumberbatch and Freeman are surrounding by extras wearing period clothing. So what does this mean in terms of story? Have they stumbled onto a re-enactment? Is Holmes having a bad dream? Has Doctor Who whisked the two away to solve a crime in the past? None of these would surprise me but something tells me creator Steven Moffat has something a little different up his sleeve. Either way, it'll be a long wait until December to see what's really going on here.

The Sherlock Special is expected to air this December.
