The explosive trailer for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 feels like an ’80s anime throwback with buckets of blood and rain

One of the most significant breakouts in animation of the past several years is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners from CD Projekt Red, adapted from Mike Pondsmith’s ’80s tabletop game. Initially developed as a one-off prequel, the Netflix animated series became so popular that we’re getting a new season with a fresh lineup of cybernetic outcasts this Fall. Today, Netflix unveiled a splashy trailer for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2, and it’s giving me Akira and Blade Runner vibes.

What’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 about?

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 presents a new standalone 10-episode story from the world of Cyberpunk 2077— a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge. In a city that thrives in the spotlight of violence, one question remains: when the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter?

Hailing from Studio TRIGGER, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is said to have a darker, grittier tone than the first season. Still, Netflix is keeping details about the new season close to the vest. Cyberpunk is one of many hit anime series on Netflix, with adaptations of Devil May Cry, Arcane: League of Legends, Castlevania, and more giving fans what they want when it comes to action, intrigue, and fappable characters.

The new season, described as a “raw chronicle of redemption and revenge,” will focus on fresh faces, including Talia Yang (a corpo with ties to Maelstrom), as well as characters like Weak Kingsley, D, and Roman Carax.

The vibes are immaculate

As I said, the new trailer is giving me ’80s anime vibes, and that’s a good thing. I love Cyberpunk‘s hand-drawn art style, and the kinetic action mixed with a glitch-metal soundtrack packs quite the punch. I’ve not seen the first season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, but I’ve been meaning to watch it. With the second season coming out this Fall, I’ll likely get caught up and review the new episodes. It’s nice to see Netflix having so much success with the animation lineup these past few years, as it’s a great platform to reach millions of subscribers who want animated offerings beyond Crunchyroll and other (shadier) sites that stream anime for free.
