Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton may star in the Suspiria remake

Last Updated on July 21, 2021

Last September, we learned that Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino has replaced David Gordon Green at the helm of the long-in-development remake of Dario Argento's 1977 classic SUSPIRIA. At that time, Guadagnino revealed some details on his own unique take on the concept of

an American ballet student who transfers to a prestigious dance academy in Germany but later realizes that the academy is a front for something far more sinister and supernatural amidst a series of murders.

Guadagnino's version of the story will be set in Berlin in 1977 and will focus very strongly on that moment in German history, while also focusing on the ideas of motherhood and finding your own voice.

During a Q&A at an Australian screening of his latest film A BIGGER SPLASH, the filmmaker shared some more information on his SUSPIRIA, saying he hopes to get composer John Adams to do music for it, that he's taking a "Fassbinderian" approach to the material, and perhaps the biggest news, that he has a couple cast member signed on: Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton.

Johnson (pictured below), who recently starred in 50 SHADES OF GREY, will presumably be taking on the heroine role played by Jessica Harper in the original film, while Swinton (above) would be a great choice to portray one of the witches that run the dance academy.

The SUSPIRIA remake has had a cast secured in the past, Green's version was going to star Isabelle Huppert, Isabelle Furhman, Janet McTeer, Michael Nyqvist, and Antje Traue, but maybe this version starring Johnson and Swinton will actually make it into production.
