Dan Aykroyd joins Netflix’s Ghostbusters animated series as an executive producer

Who you gonna call?

Sony unveiled the Ghost Corps sub-studio with its recent batch of films. The movies Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire continued the story of Egon, Ray, Peter and Winston and expanded the scope to a new team related to Egon. The Ghost Corps brand is now releasing a couple of projects on Netflix — both an animated film and an animated series. Additionally, Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, both directors of the recent film entries, have said that more movies are also being planned. The animated feature is set to be directed by Kris Pearn (The Willoughbys), but plot details are still being kept under wraps.

When someone asks if you’re a god, you say yes!

According to Deadline, Netflix has unveiled a bit more detail on the Ghostbusters animated series in its Annecy International Animated Film Festival presentation. It has been announced that none other than Dan Aykroyd is joining the creative team on the Netflix show. It has been reported that the upcoming series will be “based on the beloved Ghostbusters IP” and “debut exclusively on Netflix in 2027.” Aykroyd has reportedly stated that the show has the opportunity to “address some of the issues that we need to heal and move on with our lives.”

The other executive producers on the series that join Aykroyd are Ben Hibon, Elliott Kalan, Jason Reitman, Gil Kenan and Amie Karp. This new Ghostbusters animated series is coming our way from Sony Pictures Animation. Production on the series will be handled by Netflix and Ghost Corps, Inc., which is based at Sony’s Columbia Pictures.

Plot details are still under wraps, but past sources have said that “the 3D animated series will be tonally in line with the recent Ghostbusters films.” It’s also not clear which characters this show will be focusing on.

What about the Twinkie?

But what about the animated film? The studio has been trying to get an animated Ghostbusters movie off the ground for a long time. Original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman first announced an animated project over a decade ago. At the time, it was rumored that the story would switch things up and be told from the ghosts’ perspective. Fletcher Moules, the man behind those Clash of Clans animated ads, was set to direct.

It was recently reported that Sam Jarvis (Dollface) has been tapped to write the latest draft of the script. Previous drafts were penned by Yoni Brenner (The Bad Guys 2) and Christy Hall (It Ends With Us)
