Danny Boyle’s update

The plan for the follow-up to 28 Days Later was to release a new trilogy. 28 Years Later saw the return of Danny Boyle to the franchise and the teaser trailer alone captivated online viewers. The second film in the trilogy, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, was not a hit at the box office, but that won’t stop Sony and Boyle from finishing the story.

Our Editor-in-Chief, Chris Bumbray, recently got to interview Boyle for the 30th anniversary of Trainspotting (stay tuned for the interview). During their conversation, the director explained why they aren’t filming the next 28 Years Later installment yet and that he plans to start production on part 3 next year. Boyle reveals,

We ran out of time. Because it’s set in an area of Britain [where] you can only film at certain times of the year. We ran out of time this year – we literally ran out of time… So it’ll be, hopefully, fingers crossed, next year. But there’s the enthusiasm there, and Alex (Garland) has done a wonderful script for it.”

Will Cillian Murphy return in the next entry?

Although it was suggested that Murphy’s story could be a focus in the finale of The Bone Temple, it hasn’t yet been announced what the official plot of part 3 will be. So, is Cillian Murphy set to return for the third entry in the 28 Years Later trilogy? In a profile with The Times, Murphy addressed the situation simply by saying, “Hope so! I’m ready anyway.” With Murphy returning in the last film, the series would come full circle.

Bone Temple’s reception

While 28 Years Later: Bone Temple didn’t do big business at the box office (perhaps casual movie-going audiences weren’t aware of the trilogy plan and felt blindsided by another sequel) our Chris Bumbray is one who felt Bone Temple greatly improved on the first 28 Years Later. He said in his review“I really was shocked by how much I enjoyed 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which I found compelling from start to finish. The cast is great, with O’Connell and Fiennes in top form, while Mayor of Kingstown’s Emma Laird also pops up in a great part as one of the more evil members of the gang (whereas Willow star Erin Kellyman is one of the more humane members — and similarly effective). Heck, even if you REALLY didn’t like the last one, give this one a shot. It’s such a huge improvement you’ll barely believe it.”
