Back in the day, the plot device of “the end of the world” was reserved for horror and science fiction films. But, since the zombie genre took off in the early 2000s, you see the armageddon device used in every possible film from art house fair to mainstream comedies. Now, we have an indie film featuring a roster of recognizable faces from television and film focusing on surviving the apocalypse.
Todd Berger’s IT’S A DISASTER imagines the world coming to an end for a circle of friends trapped in a house after dirty bombs have been dropped in the closest major city. What follows looks to be funny and quite dark.
Here’s the synopsis:
Eight friends meet for their monthly “couples brunch.” But what starts as an impromptu therapy session / airing of domestic grievances takes a sudden, catastrophic turn when the city falls victim to a mysterious attack. Trapped in the house and unsure of their fates, these seemingly normal people become increasingly unhinged to hilarious, surprising, and revealing results.
David Cross usually plays the wacky character in films these days, so it was strange to see him playing it straight against the other cast members including Rachel Boston, Kevin M. Brennan, America Ferrera, Jeff Grace, Erinn Hayes, Blaise Miller, Julia Stiles, Jesse Draper, Laura Adkin and Rob McGillivray.
Note to all of you single Schmoes out there: brunch is the worst possible thing you can do with your significant other. It does feel like the end of the world when you are in the middle of it. But, if you want to check out this funny take on it, check out IT’S A DISASTER on demand on March 5th and in theaters on April 12th.
