Honoring the Legacy of Diane Keaton
The loss of Diane Keaton plays a significant role in the sequel’s script, with filmmaker Thomas Bezucha seeing the new movie as a way to honor the legendary actress, who played Sybil Stone in the 2005 original.
“I’ve been haunted by the loss of Sybil for months now while I worked on it, and so this was a blow on a tender bruise already,” Bezucha said during a CNN interview, late last year. “Mentally, I’ve been spending time in that house where I’ve been missing her for a while already.”
On that note, Bezucha says he wants to “honor [Keaton] even more” and “do a good job by the rest of the cast.”
A New Chapter for the Stone Family
The new film, titled The Families Stone, picks up 20 years after the death of her character, matriarch Sybil Stone — something that was depicted in the original film — as the Stone family again reunites for Christmas, only to face the season’s biggest surprise: their father (Nelson) has unexpectedly invited the woman he’s fallen in love with to meet the family.
A Holiday Classic Returns
Tom Bezucha has returned to direct from his own script. The original Family Stone film grossed $92 million worldwide in its December 2005 release with 20th Century Fox. It’s become a holiday favorite in the years since, though not on the level of a Home Alone, A Christmas Story, or Elf.
