GONE GIRL director David Fincher (and the subject for this week's "The Good, The Bad & The Badass") has been everywhere lately, and he recently told Total Film he did have a meeting with Lucasfilm president and producer Kathleen Kennedy about possibly directing STAR WARS: EPISODE VII. Fincher was rumored to be interested in helming EPISODE VII before J.J. Abrams landed the job.

I talked to Kathy about it, but I think that it's a different thing from… I don't know what Disney-Lucasfilm will be like…It's tricky. My favourite is The Empire Strikes Back. If I said, 'I want to do something more like that,' then I'm sure the people paying for it would be like, 'No! You can't do that! We want it like the other one with all the creatures!…I always thought of Star Wars as the story of two slaves [C-3PO and R2-D2] who go from owner to owner, witnessing their masters' folly, the ultimate folly of man… I thought it was an interesting idea in the first two, but it's kind of gone by Return Of The Jedi.

Considering all the drama David Fincher went through with ALIEN 3, I can understand why he decided the project wasn't for him. And although a Fincher directed STAR WARS: EPISODE VII sounds awesome in theory, I just don't think it would have been a good fit for the him, especially since he likely wouldn't have complete control over the film.

But hey, if Disney and Lucasfilm ever want to do a dark STAR WARS spinoff movie featuring C-3PO and R2-D2 (and will allow Fincher to do what he wants with the film), they know who to call.

David Fincher's GONE GIRL will be in theaters on October 3, 2014, and J.J. Abrams' STAR WARS: EPISODE VII is set to open on December 18, 2015.
