Nine years ago, legendary filmmaker John Carpenter told Game Informer that he would love to direct a film adaptation of the video game Dead Space. A Dead Space movie was in development at that time, so a producer or a studio executive should have immediately reached out to Carpenter and offered him the job. But they didn’t. Carpenter was never hired to make a Dead Space movie, and a Dead Space movie has still never been made. In a new interview, Carpenter has once again let it be known that he would like to direct a film based on the game.

During a conversation with AV Club‘s William Hughes, Carpenter was asked if he had ever thought about making a video game movie. He replied, “The only one I can think of, and I’ve mentioned it before, is Dead Space. That would make a real great movie. I could do that.

Here’s his quote from nine years ago: “I maintain that Dead Space would just make a great movie because you have these people coming onto an abandoned, shut-down space ship and they have to start it up and something’s on board. It’s just great stuff. I would love to make Dead Space [into a film], I’ll tell you that right now. That one is ready-made.

Dead Space has the following set-up:

A massive mining ship, the USG Ishimura, comes in contact with a mysterious alien artifact on a distant planet and suddenly loses its communications with Earth. Engineer Isaac Clarke is sent to repair the Ishimura’s communications, but arrives to find a floating vessel that has become a complete bloodbath. The crew is mutilated and infected with an ancient alien scourge. Clarke’s repair mission is transformed to one of survival as he fights to save himself and return the artifact to the planet at any cost.
