Deadpool screenwriters say sequel doesn’t need a huge budget

DEADPOOL 2 hasn't been officially announced yet, but it's pretty much a given at this point that a sequel is going to happen. So far the R-rated comic book movie has grossed more than $320 million worldwide on a budget of just $58 million, and it is expected to hit $250 million in the U.S. by the end of the weekend.

Speaking of sequels and budgets, DEADPOOL writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (aka "The Real Heroes") talked a little about their plans for the follow-up during a conversation with Collider, and Wernick explained why they don't think the next film needs a huge budget.

We don’t want $150 million to go make the next movie, that’s not Deadpool. Deadpool doesn’t lift cities up into the air or battle aliens coming down to earth, that’s just not Deadpool. So we’re happy in that little small budget range that they have us in; we don’t wanna blow this next one out.

While this interview took place before the movie wildly overperformed in its opening weekend, I doubt Reese and Wernick have changed their mind since. But I also don't think they would say "Thanks, but no thanks" if Fox wanted to give them another $15 to $25 million to work with for DEADPOOL 2, especially since it was recently revealed that the studio gave the duo and director Tim Miller 48 hours to cut the film's budget by $7 million. I do agree with Reese and Wernick though that the sequel absolutely doesn't need to an enormous budget. Like Biggie once said, "Mo' money, mo' problems."
