Damn party-poopers!
Right when we thought we might be treated to as bloody a row between the SAW and PARANORMAL ACTIVITY franchises as a sadistic ploy from Jigsaw himself, word is SAW VII (ENDGAME) will most likely mark the end of the hugely successful horror franchise.
While speaking to a U.K. radio program, SAW 4-7 co-writer Patrick Melton expressed that, while initial plans were to stretch the franchise out to at least an 8th entry, paltry returns for SAW VI has pretty much sealed the fate for the perennial October moneymaking brand.
As Melton puts it to the peeps at Latinoreview, “I think it’s going to end with Saw VII. I have a very strong feeling it’s going to end with Saw VII. That’s something we’re debating now. You saw in previous interviews or discussions where we thought Saw VIII would be the last one where we had the first trilogy and the second trilogy and then sort of a grand finale wrapped up in two films. But frankly because Saw VI hasn’t performed as well as we anticipated, the idea is well why make two movies when we can make one really excellent movie that wraps up as best we can? And it’s going to be in 3-D which sort of adds to the spectacle. So if you had to ask me, I don’t own the franchise, nor do I run the studio, but I have a feeling, a strong feeling that it’s going to be Saw VII which will be also known as ENDGAME. And nothing’s official yet, but that’s where we’re hoping things will go.”
And seeing how reboots are all abuzz these days (see SCREAM, MAD MAX, PLANET OF THE APES, etc.), Melton chimes in, saying it “maybe ten years from now”, adding “At this point everyone is very focused on making Saw VII and seeing if we can make this sort of the grand finale.”
Okay, a couple of things here. First off, If you’re like me (and my dudes Ammon and Eric, who I’ve heard discuss this very topic on the AITH podcasts), then you feel the SAW franchise really should have wrapped up after part 3, for many reasons I won’t go into now. Also, it seems a bit odd to declare this 3D entry a grand finale. If the format is to sustain its popularity in the wake of AVATAR, how can you decide to wrap up the series without knowing how it’ll perform? If SAW VII was shot in 2D, then you can assume it’ll perform on par with SAW VI. But doesn’t 3D at least warrant postponing the decision making process until after the receipts are in? It seems to me that if (and/or when) SAW VII 3D goes through the roof, an entire 3D SAW trilogy is likely to be green lit. Right? After all, money f*ckin’ talks!
