Denis Villeneuve’s Dune remake will be nothing like the David Lynch film

Dune

It's been quite a long time since I last watched David Lynch's feature-film adaptation of Frank Herbert's DUNE, but it seems that I won't need to revisit it (although I should anyway) in order to get up to speed for Denis Villeneuve's upcoming remake. Although the director will be taking a break now that BLADE RUNNER 2049 has been released, Denis Villeneuve told Yahoo! during a Facebook Live interview that he's slowly working away on DUNE, which happens to be one of his favourite sci-fi novels.

Although Denis Villeneuve has a lot of respect for David Lynch, and recalls being impressed by his 1984 adaptation of DUNE, the director said that his version will be nothing like what Lynch presented.

David Lynch did an adaptation in the ’80s that has some very strong qualities, I mean David Lynch is one of the best filmmakers alive, I have massive respect for him. But when I saw his adaptation I was impressed, but it was not what I had dreamed of, so I’m trying to make the adaptation of my dreams.

Noting that he was still on the first draft of the screenplay, Denis Villeneuve said that the remake "will not have any link with the David Lynch movie," and added that he will be "going back to the book, and going back to the images that came out when I read it." Frank Herbert's "Dune" has proven to be quite difficult to adapt in the past, but I've certainly got faith in Denis Villeneuve's abilities. Here's hoping that he brings Roger Deakins along for the ride as well.

BLADE RUNNER 2049 is still playing in theaters.
