Deadline reports that Denzel Washington is set to star in a new thriller for United Artists and Amazon MGM Studios, which will be directed by Christopher McQuarrie.
Denzel Washington & Christopher McQuarrie
The untitled thriller, which was once titled The Frame, will follow “a former police detective serving a life sentence who is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Granted compassionate release with six months to live, he returns home to the estranged daughter he left behind and a grandson he never knew existed. He only wants to make amends and forget his dark past, but his dark past has not forgotten him.” It sounds like it could be a fun time. This is the type of role Washington excels at.
The script has been written by Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner, and production is slated to begin in New Jersey in November. The search is on for an actress to play Washington’s daughter.
The film has already been slated for an October 1, 2027 release.
Hannibal
Washington had been planning to reunite with Antoine Fuqua for an historical epic about Hannibal, the Carthaginian general who battled against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War. However, the long-awaited project was put on hold due to budget concerns, and the actor moved on to other projects.
Earlier this year, it was reported that the Hannibal project was “effectively dead” due to the budget reportedly swelling to over $200 million.
Moving On From Tom Cruise
As for McQuarrie, he’s been in the Tom Cruise business for almost 20 years, starting with writing Valkyrie in 2008. He went on to direct Cruise in Jack Reacher and four back-to-back Mission: Impossible sequels, including Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
Although McQuarrie has said he’s developing more projects with Tom Cruise, he is branching out with other movies. He’s set to direct an adaptation of the video game Battlefield at Sony, which would star Michael B. Jordan. He’s also been working with Arnold Schwarzenegger on King Conan. The actor has said that McQuarrie will write and direct the sequel, with production looking to kick off in 2027.
