Netflix is opening the gates to Sanctuary for an animated TV series adaptation of Blizzard Entertainment’s Diablo video game franchise.
Blizzard president Johanna Faries officially announced the project during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026 at the Anaheim Convention Center on Saturday, stating, “After decades of bringing entire universes to life through our games, we’re partnering with some creative powerhouses to tell even more stories beyond gaming across new screens. A new animated series set in the world of ‘Diablo’ is in development with Netflix. More details will be shared in the future, but this is only the beginning…”
Set in the dark and twisted world of Sanctuary, Diablo follows humanity’s desperate struggle against the eternal onslaught of the High Heavens and the Burning Hells. Across four core titles, players take up arms as iconic classes like the Barbarian, Necromancer, and Druid, wielding magic and brute force against hordes of evil in a world in dire need of a savior.
Diablo V, Amazon Class, and Switch 2 Details Revealed
The animated series wasn’t the only major reveal. Blizzard also teased the development of Diablo V, alongside the next expansion for Diablo IV, which will officially bring back the fan-favorite Amazon class. Additionally, the game’s upcoming season, Hell’s Legacy, kicks off on Tuesday, September 15. The event celebrates the franchise’s history by bringing back classic enemies and legendary characters, including Deckard Cain. Rounding out the announcements, Blizzard unveiled the Diablo: Age of Hatred collection, a Nintendo Switch 2 release bundling Diablo IV and both of its expansions, launching alongside the new season on September 15.
A Personal Legacy in the Burning Hells
For long-time fans, this flood of announcements feels like a celebration of decades spent in Sanctuary. I’ve been playing Diablo since the original game dropped. A friend and I used to sleep in shifts just to keep playing Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, and my wife and I spent countless nights running Diablo III together online when we lived in separate countries early in our relationship. We still jump into Diablo IV every week and are counting down the hours until Hell’s Legacy drops this Tuesday.
