There’s been a lot of secrecy surrounding Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Digger, but the mystery project starring Tom Cruise has dropped a brand-new trailer at CinemaCon. Both Cruise and Iñárritu took to the stage to introduce the new footage.
Cruise’s character is named Digger Rockwell, and the actor says it took him 40 years to put on the boots of this man. Our own Chris Bumbray said the trailer was crazy, but it sadly won’t be released to the public.
Bumbray described it as a modern Dr. Strangelove. Digger is one of the most powerful and richest men on the planet, but due to a huge environmental mistake, he’s brought the world to the brink of war and disaster. The president (John Goodman) demands that he fix the problem. Thus, Digger must travel around the world in order to negotiate peace or at least survival. There are some Les Grossman vibes, but Digger is Texan with slightly more hair and sounds like Ross Perot. The film looks incredible on 70mm VistaVision and could very well be a serious Oscar contender.
I’m very curious to see more from this. Hopefully, the rest of us will get to see a trailer before too long.
In addition to Cruise, Digger also stars Sandra Hüller (Project Hail Mary), Jesse Plemons (Bugonia), John Goodman (The Connors), Riz Ahmed (The Phoenician Scheme), Michael Stuhlbarg (After the Hunt), Sophie Wilde (Babygirl), Emma D’Arcy (House of the Dragon), Robert John Burke (Robocop 3), Burn Gorman (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice), and Pip Torrens (Preacher).
Plemons has previously teased that the film is something of a modern-day Dr. Strangelove, which jives with what Bumbray saw. “It’s one of the strangest, funniest, most tragic scripts I’ve read,” he said. “There’s a kind of modern-day Dr. Strangelove thing, and then it becomes something else entirely. Getting to see Tom just go for it — not in a death-defying action way but fully showing what an incredible actor he is — that was thrilling.“
Digger is set to be released in theaters on October 2.
