Oh boy, this isn’t going to be pretty. Director Roland Emmerich has been out promoting the upcoming release of INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE, and during a conversation with The Guardian, the filmmaker made it very clear that he isn’t interested in directing a comic book movie. Apparently Emmerich is filled with “disdain at the notion that his films have anything in common with the superhero genre currently crowding multiplexes,” and the director went on to explain why isn’t a fan of the genre.
When you look at my movies it’s always the regular Joe Schmo that’s the unlikely hero. A lot of Marvel movies, they show people in funny suits running around. I don’t like people in capes. I find it silly when someone dons a superhero suit and flies. I don’t understand it. I grew up in Germany, that’s probably why.

So people flying around in funny suits is silly, but Jeff Goldblum stopping an alien invasion with a computer virus isn’t? Kind of reminds me of when Oliver Stone complained about the “fantasy violence” in the Breaking Bad series finale. I get it, superhero movies aren’t everybody’s cup of tea, but that’s still kind of a weak explanation from Emmerich as to why he doesn’t care for them.
