Disney does not currently have a sequel to Big Hero 6 in development

Disney made their Marvel Comics animated feature BIG HERO 6 with the knowledge that it would likely be an automatic hit. With their string of non-Pixar hits like WRECK-IT RALPH, FROZEN, and TANGLED, Disney has several burgeoning franchises on their hands. So, when will any of those movies be getting a sequel? In regards to BIG HERO 6, don’t hold your breath.

Speaking with Creative Screenwriting about their Oscar-nominated hit, BIG HERO 6 directors Don Hall and Chris Williams spoke about the potential for further adventures starring Hiro, Baymax, and the other rookie heroes. Williams shared this.

“[Laughs] We’ll see. We just finished this one, and the truth is, we’re exhausted from the ordeal of making it. It was really fun, but it was long hours, and it was pretty intense. It’s a pretty emotional time for us. These are characters that we’ve grown to know very well, now it’s time to let go of them, and they’re going into the world without us. We’re in the middle of that phase. So we haven’t talked about or thought about any sequels or anything like that. Having said that, of course, we love these characters, and the thought of working with them again some day definitely has its appeal.”

Hall continued with this.

John Lasseter is very supportive of the directors, and he won’t force them to put out a sequel unless they have a story that really excited about. It has to feel like a story that really has to be told, or deserves to be told. It can’t just be cashing in on the success of a previous film.”

I enjoyed BIG HERO 6 quite a bit and the movie is one of the few Disney animated films crying out for a sequel. I could leave FROZEN and WRECK-IT RALPH as standalones, but the comic book nature of BIG HERO 6 gives the filmmakers a wide range of places to take the story. I would prefer that Disney continue to try and create unique and original films rather than tons of sequels, but BIG HERO 6 is the one I would have no problem with seeing more of.

BIG HERO 6 hits Blu-ray on February 24th.
