Nothing grows a streaming service quite like a global pandemic. The Disney+ streaming service launched in November 2019 and the company announced today that they have achieved a new milestone as they've surpassed 50 million paid subscribers around the globe. Not bad at all, especially as Disney+ hasn't yet rolled out in all countries.
"We’re truly humbled that Disney+ is resonating with millions around the globe, and believe this bodes well for our continued expansion throughout Western Europe and into Japan and all of Latin America later this year," said Kevin Mayer, Chairman of Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer & International. "Great storytelling inspires and uplifts, and we are in the fortunate position of being able to deliver a vast array of great entertainment rooted in joy and optimism on Disney+." For comparison, Netflix leads the pack with 169 million paid subscribers, followed by Amazon Prime at 150 million, but both those services have been around for over a decade.
While Disney+ includes content from Pixar, Lucasfilm, Marvel, and National Geographic, as well as Disney itself, the streaming service still doesn't have a lot of original content under its belt. The biggest original series by far has been The Mandalorian, which was the first live-action STAR WARS TV series, but there's plenty more lined up for the future, including a handful of shows set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as several other STAR WARS shows, such as an Obi-Wan Kenobi series and a ROGUE ONE prequel series featuring Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and K-2SO (Alan Tudyk).
