Disney hires Alice in Wonderland scribe to write Maleficent

Back in January, Jakey D. brought you the news that one of Tim Burton’s (seemingly endless) potential projects is MALEFICENT, an “updated” version of SLEEPING BEAUTY that would tell classic fairy tale from the point of view of the self-proclaimed “Mistress of All Evil.” Not a bad concept, and now with ALICE IN WONDERLAND proving to be a blockbuster, it looks as though the film is one step closer to becoming a reality.

Disney has hired ALICE scribe Linda Woolverton to pen the story, which could be seen as the first move toward locking up Burton as well. Of course, the man now has more plates spinning than a goddamn Las Vegas nightclub act, so who knows if this will be his next, or if it’ll be FRANKENWEENIE. Or DARK SHADOWS. Personally, I’d like to see ED WOOD 2: MORE WOOD, but that’s just me.

If he does indeed tackle MALEFICENT, it would be another in a long line of uninspired choices for the director. I’d love to see him use his clout to really get something new and unique off the ground, but perhaps he’s content to stay the same old Tim Burton. Who am I to tell him he can’t…
