Hercules, Disney, live-action

At this point it would be easier to count the films which Disney isn't giving the live-action treatment to. THR has reported that Disney is developing a live-action remake of HERCULES, the 1997 animated film which retold the legend of Hercules complete with catchy songs and memorable characters.

Dave Callaham, who penned Marvel's upcoming SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS and Warner Bros.' WONDER WOMAN 1984, has been tapped to pen the script for the HERCULES remake, with Joe and Anthony Russo set to produce the film via their AGBO banner. It's not clear how closely the live-action film will follow the original at the moment, or even if it will keep the musical elements, but it's still early days. HERCULES featured the voices of Tate Donovan, Danny DeVito, Susan Egan, and James Woods as Hades, the lord of the underworld. Here's the synopsis of the original film:

Disney tackles Greek mythology in this animated feature. Hercules (Tate Donovan), a son of gods, was snatched as a baby by Hades (James Woods) and forced to live among mortals as a half-man, half-god. Now a teenager, Hercules needs to perform a rite of passage on Earth to prove himself worthy of living with the gods on Mount Olympus. With his plucky satyr sidekick, Philoctetes (Danny DeVito), along for the ride, Hercules must learn how to use his strength to defeat a series of evil creatures.

We've seen more than a few live-action remakes of Disney's animated classics over the past few years, with even more on the way. The next live-action Disney remake is MULAN, which was slated to hit theaters on March 27th, but was pushed back to July 24, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
