Donald Glover’s Lando steals the show in new Solo: A Star Wars Story images

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Set about ten years before Han Solo (Harrison Ford) met up with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) in that cantina in Mos Eisley, SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY finds the character eager to prove his worth among the undesirables of the galactic underworld. "It really is a rite of passage," SOLO director Ron Howard told Entertainment Weekly. "The story sends him on an unexpected journey that hurtles him into a dangerous world surrounded by charismatic but lawless characters. And that’s where he needs to try to make his way and gain his freedom. So, so much of this is about trying to satisfy that yearning to really be free, to really call his own shots in a very lawless part of the galaxy and at a time when it was wide-open." Although I'm still not convinced that Han Solo's backstory is something we really need to witness, I am slowly coming around to the film, particularly Donald Glover's Lando Calrissian, who I feel confident will easily steal the spotlight.

Entertainment Weekly has a few new photos from SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY featuring Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) and Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo), but, predictably, it's Lando Calrissian who comes away as the coolest dude in the room.

We never got to see all that much of the relationship between Han Solo and Lando Calrissian in the Original Trilogy, so it will be interesting to see where it all began. "Their relationship is many different things, as it is when you see them in the original films," Alden Ehrenreich said. "I think they have very different styles." Speaking of style, it should come as no surprise that Lando's always the best-dressed person on the set. "I don’t say that lightly," Donald Glover said. "There’s a lot of cool costumes and a lot of cool clothing. He takes pride in the clothing. It makes things easier. When people see you and you’re debonair, they tend to want to give you stuff easier."

The official synopsis for SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY:

Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” an all-new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo befriends his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and meets the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.

SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY will hit theaters on May 25, 2018.
