Donkey: Eddie Murphy’s Shrek spinoff starts heating the waffle iron for a Summer 2028 release

Who wants waffles? According to reports, Universal and DreamWorks Animation are ordering up a batch of the good stuff, with Donkey, a Shrek spinoff starring Eddie Murphy, set to release on June 30, 2028. The film, which finds Murphy reprising his beloved role as Shrek’s best friend, is an origin story of how a donkey became Donkey.

Who are the creative forces behind Donkey?

Eddie Murphy teased Universal’s Donkey spinoff during the press tour for his better-than-you’ d-expect Netflix sequel, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. Charlie Bean (The Lego Batman Movie and the live-action Lady and the Tramp) will direct Donkey alongside the project’s co-director Matt Flynn, whose story artist credits at DreamWorks include The Wild RobotPuss in Boots: The Last Wish, and The Bad Guys 2. Rebecca Huntly will produce.

Murphy teases his Donkey spinoff film

“Donkey’s going to have his own movie, own little story with his dragon wife and his kids that are half-dragon and half-donkeys… They’ve written this funny story,” Murphy told ScreenRant last summer.

Believe it or not, Shrek is a $4 billion franchise! The series includes four Shrek movies and two Puss in Boots movies. Shrek 5 comes to theaters on June 30, 2027. In the upcoming animated feature, Shrek and Donkey team up for another whirlwind, big-city adventure, while introducing Shrek and Fiona’s three children. The cast features Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy reprising their iconic roles as Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey, respectively. Meanwhile, the upcoming animated film introduces Zendaya, Skyler Gisondo, and Marcello Hernández as Shrek and Fiona’s kids, Felicia, Farkle, and Fergus, respectively.

What do you think about Donkey getting his own film? If it worked for Puss in Boots, it can certainly work for Donkey. I do wonder if too much Donkey is asking for trouble. Still, the character is so charming and funny, it’s easy to see why Universal and DreamWorks would want to keep the Shrek train chugging with another spinoff film after completing work on Shrek 5. Is a Donkey origin story the answer, though? How long will the character be a regular donkey before learning how to talk? We’ll find out when Donkey comes to theaters in the summer of 2028.
