Doug Liman hopes to film Edge of Tomorrow 2 after Mission: Impossible 8

Back in 2014, director Doug Liman, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt delivered a beloved sci-fi spectacle with EDGE OF TOMORROW (later titled LIVE, DIE, REPEAT). The film saw Cruise in the role of an untrained soldier whose job it was to relive the same day repeatedly, the day restarting every time he died. With his mission being instrumental to the survival of the human race, Cruise's character, Cage, takes his orders from Rita (Emily Blunt), a hard-as-nails officer trained in the art of combat. Under Rita's tutelage, Cage steadily becomes an alien killing machine. However, unless he can execute their plans for survival to the letter, all hope will assuredly be lost.

As it happens, the film was a major hit with fans of the action sci-fi genre, and many have been calling for a sequel ever since.

With that demand in mind, I'm happy to report that a follow-up to the film is still something that Liman would like to see. In fact, while speaking with ComicBook.com earlier this month, Liman told the outlet that he's got a production window in mind for the long-gestating project. It's a bit of a long shot, but Liman says that he'd like to see the film made after Cruise wraps his contributions to MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 and 8.

"I'm hoping. If we're going to do it, that would be the time," said Liman about the possibbility of a post-MI window.

When asked about how far the project is into its scripting process, Liman confirmed that "Yeah, the script is ready."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm catching a bit of optimism from Liman here, so perhaps this project will come together after all? I know plenty of people who would love to see a sequel to EDGE OF TOMORROW get the green light, myself included. How about you? Are your fingers still crossed for this all to come together, or have you moved on? Let us know in the comments section down below.
