Time for Dracula to rise from the grave again. Variety reports that Universal, home of the Bela Lugosi original, has picked up spec script DRACULA YEAR ZERO. The story, from writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless:
[E]xplores the origin of Dracula, weaving vampire mythology with the true history of Prince Vlad the Impaler, depicting Dracula as a flawed hero in a tragic love story set in a dark age of magic and war.
So maybe it’ll be cooler than it sounds, but if the synopsis was a Rorschach test, the word that would come to mind is lame. For one thing, I’m not that interested in Dracula as tragic hero. He’s a charming ass bad guy. Plus that whole bit about a tragic love story makes it seem like they should just cast Colin Firth and title it DRACULA AND PREJUDICE.
Guess we’ll have to wait and see, but I’m far from hopeful on this one.
