Early versions of Spider-Man: Far From Home gave Mysterio a different origin

MAJOR SPOILERS for SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME. Be warned! After the events of AVENGERS: ENDGAME, the latest Marvel epic finds Peter Parker (Tom Holland) heading out on a European vacation with his classmates for some much needed rest, only to find his trip interrupted when Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) recruits him to fight against elemental creatures attacking across the continent. Thankfully, Spidey isn't the only one dealing with this new threat as Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), a superhero from another dimension, is able to lend a hand.

As many of you suspected, it turned out that Mysterio wasn't a hero after-all, nor was he from a different dimension, but rather a disgruntled Stark Industries employee who used advanced projector drones in order to simulate the Elemental attacks and masquerade as a hero. In an interview with Collider, SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers revealed that there was once another major reveal regarding Mysterio early in the development process.

There were some early, early versions of this movie where Mysterio was a Skrull… There were a lot of Skrull versions of the story early on. When you’re doing a con artist movie, what we finally landed on—we sat down and talked about how do we keep on fooling the audience, how do we keep on having a lot of fun reveals? How many distractions can we get away with before people want to murder us? [The Mysterio skrull reveal] was an early idea about why he was doing everything he was doing.

That would have been quite the twist, but as we know, the Skrull switcheroo did make it into SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME, albeit in a different form. In a post-credit scene, it was revealed that the Nick Fury (Jackson) and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) which we'd seen throughout the film were actually Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) and Soren (Sharon Blynn) from CAPTAIN MARVEL, and that the real Nick Fury was enjoying a little vacation on a Skrull ship.
