Despite writing or directing neither, today marks a time when Eli Roth has two separate features in theaters. Polar opposites they couldn’t be, as PIRANHA 3-D (which Roth acts in) has been striking a chord with critics, THE LAST EXORCISM (which Roth produced), not so much. Not only that, it’s been 3 years since dude’s sat in the director’s chair (not counting INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS), so the question of if and when his return would ever happen gets more pertinent by the passing day. Well, according to Cinema Blend, looks like Roth’s taking a holiday…
Of course I’m talkin’ THANKSGIVING, a feature adaptation of the faux-GRINDHOUSE trailer that bridged Tarantino and Rodriguez’s cinematic sleaze-fest. We’ve ran many an article on how Roth intends to make the trailer into a full length horror throwback, and today is just another chapter in the ongoing saga. Hopefully a script will be hashed out soon…
Here’s what Roth told CB:
“I’ve been working on the script with my co-writer, Jeff Rendell, who plays the pilgrim in the trailer. And it’s me imitating Jeff’s voice [for the narration]. But Jeff has been working. I said that his deal is he has to work on the script while I’m promoting The Last Exorcism, and as soon as I’m done in mid-September he’s going to fly to California, we’re going to sit down, and bang out the script.”
Nice! If this pans out, Roth and Rendell could be at the keyboard in a few weeks…now that’s some movement. Who knows, if THE LAST EXORCISM tanks financially (as it appears to be critically), Roth may wanna right his name, thereby giving us the most hardcore rendering of THANKSGIVING we’ve all been dreaming of for the past three years. I sure as shite hope so!
