Eternals 2: Patton Oswalt says a sequel is on the way with Chloe Zhao returning to direct

While the DCEU continues to suffer one setback after another, the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains a steady flow of super-powered entertainment for fans of cinematic spectacle. After revealing plans for Phase 5 and Phase 6 at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel voice actor Patton Oswalt says Eternals 2 is happening with Chloe Zhao returning to direct.

Speaking with The Today Show, Oswalt told the outlet Eternals 2 is already in the mix, and Zhao will return to direct the sequel. “They have announced there is going to be an Eternals sequel and Chloe Zhao is going to direct it,” he revealed. “So, hopefully, there will be more adventures of Starfox and Pip.”

It’s worth noting that Eternals ended with Marvel saying, “Eternals will return,” during the closing credits. While this proclamation is far from confirmation for a proper sequel, Oswalt may know something we don’t. However, Marvel producer Nate Moore did say that Eternals 2 is not a “must-have” for the studio.

“It’s not something that is a must-have,” he said in 2021. “Obviously, we have ideas of where we could go, but there isn’t a hard and fast rule where we have to have three of these things and this is the first. If you just watch Eternals, you can enjoy Eternals, you can understand Eternals and you’re good to go.”

Marvel’s Eternals features Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Barry Keoghan, Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Brian Tyree Henry, Lia McHugh, Lauren Ridloff, and Ma Dong-seok as immortal beings who lived on Earth and shaped its history and civilizations. Eternals received mixed reviews upon release, though the film has garnered high praise from a subsection of fans after its home release. While the film’s atmosphere and character-driven plot is seen as a departure from Marvel’s tried-and-true formula, it’s also a large part of its lasting appeal.

What do you think about Oswalt teasing Eternals 2? Do you think we’ll see his character, Pip, mixed up in another adventure with Starfox (Harry Styles)? How will audiences respond to more Eternals content? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.
