Everyone you might expect is supposedly being considered for Steven Soderbergh’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

An update of the 60s spy show THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. is one of the projects on Steven Soderbergh’s “to do” list before his theoretical retirement, but the filmmaker’s frequent collaborator George Clooney dropped out, leaving a void of handsomeness that must still be filled.

The original 1964-68 show starred Robert Vaughn and David McCallum as U.N.C.L.E. agents Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin, who used their wits and an array of groovy gadgets to battle the evil organization THRUSH.

The Playlist claims that for the Kuryakin role, Soderbergh is considering actor Joel Kinnaman, co-star of AMC’s “The Killing” (he also has THE DARKEST HOUR and THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO on the way).

And while the recent “wish list” or rumor mill has included the usual suspects of hot actors like Alexander Skarsgard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds, Chris Pine, Christian Bale, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jon Hamm, Russell Crowe, Ewan McGregor and Jude Law, Soderbergh is apparently keen on Michael Fassbender, who worked with the director on HAYWIRE.

The Warner Bros. project is scheduled to shoot in early 2012, so expect the cast to come together soon… or for Soderbergh to walk away from the project if he doesn’t get the actors he likes.

Matthew Vaughn was once attached to direct THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E., but ultimately applied his retro sensibilities to X-MEN: FIRST CLASS instead.
