Oh wow, is everything suddenly awesome, again? It sure sounds like it, seeing as Universal Pictures has announced that they've entered into a five-year exclusive deal with the LEGO Group to develop, produce, and distribute films based on the studio's legendary library of films and LEGO's time-honored build-a-brick toys. At the forefront of this monumental deal are Chairman of the Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, Donna Langley, and Jill Wilfert, who serves as the Head of Entertainment of the LEGO Group.

Universal has been hoping to land an exclusive deal with the LEGO Group since last year, after a proposed LEGO film project had failed to be be given the green light. Ever since that time, LEGO's big screen business has been up for grabs, with Universal emerging victorious as the franchise's new home for cinematic endeavors.

“The LEGO System in Play gives people the ability to build worlds and create stories that they carry throughout every phase of their lives,” said Langley. “To partner with such an iconic brand that remains relevant and is constantly evolving allows for creativity in storytelling. We’re thrilled to start building out the next chapter of LEGO movies together with Jill and the LEGO team as they continue to inspire curiosity and innovation.”

“Universal’s commitment to unique storytelling from diverse voices makes the Studio the perfect partner as the LEGO Group enters this new phase of filmmaking,” Wilfert added. “Donna and the entire Universal team bring a sense of wonder and imagination we share, and we can’t wait to execute on our shared vision.”

Now that Universal holds the exclusive rights to LEGO's film-oriented forays, which of their iconic properties do you think we can expect to see up on the big screen? I mean, LEGO Jurassic Park feels like a given, but what about a LEGO adaptation of JAWS, or a monster mash-style story featuring Universal's lineup of classic movie monsters? What about LEGO Fast & Furious, or even an epic LEGO and James Bond crossover? Great Scott! What about LEGO Back to the Future? Could that be the smartest way to bring Doc Brown and Marty back for another time traveling adventure? Hell, they could even get Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover and Thomas F. Wilson to reprise their characters for the new film! Jumpin' gigawatts!
