With the recent encouraging news that ARMY OF DARKNESS 2 has some life in it comes sad news on the “other” EVIL DEAD front: Fede Alvarez, the director of the EVIL DEAD remake that hit back in the spring, is no longer attached to the project.
Interestingly, it seems as though he hasn’t been on board for a while, but this is the first we’re hearing of his departure. The news comes from the Spanish site Gorosito.TV (via STYD); Alvarez’s co-writer on the remake, Rodo Sayagues, told the outlet the following:
Look, I am sorry to tell you this but that movie won’t happen. Evil Dead 2 is not going to happen, at least not with us involved. We left that project many months ago because we preferred to put our energies on other things. I don’t know if the producers still have intentions of making it. But what I can tell you is that we are not part of that project.”
Naturally, this doesn’t mean the project is dead; it grossed just south of $100 million worldwide off a budget of $17 million, so the producers are likely eager to rev up a sequel. But it appears as though we won’t be seeing EVIL DEAD 2 anytime soon.
Don’t fret for Alvarez, however. He’s heading up Universal’s bigscreen adaptation of the popular video game DANTE’S INFERNO.
