Get ready to scarf tacos and ralph rainbows because Netflix has officially announced the development of a new adult-animated series based on the hilarious card battle game Exploding Kittens, and now it’s got a cast featuring Lucy Liu. In addition to promoting the new animated project, the streamer teased an Exploding Kittens video game set to debut next month. Do you want more? How about a stacked list of actors set to voice characters for the new series?

“Netflix is the only service that could bring Exploding Kittens to life in both a series and a game,” said in a statement by Matthew Inman, Exploding Kittens Chief Creative Officer and creator of The Oatmeal. “We actually launched Exploding Kittens on Kickstarter as a weekend project, but our community has been the heart and soul of the company over the past six years. The new series and game will give our fans new ways to connect and interact with the franchise.”

Exploding onto Netflix in 2023, the Exploding Kittens series will feature the voices of Tom Ellis (Lucifer) as God Cat, Sasheer Zamata (Home Economics) as Devil Cat, and Mark Proksch (What We Do in the Shadows). Abraham Lim (The Boys) and Ally Maki (Toy Story 4) voice a pair of siblings, with Lucy Liu (Elementary) starring as their mother.

Here’s the official synopsis:

In the animated series, the eternal conflict between Heaven and Hell reaches epic proportions when both God and the Devil are sent to Earth – in the bodies of chunky house cats.

Shane Kosakowski and Matthew Inman executive produce and showrun, alongside the creators of Exploding Kittens, Elan Lee, and The Oatmeal’s Inman. Mike Judge, Greg Daniels, and Dustin Davis of Bandera Entertainment also executive produce with Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping via the Chernin Entertainment Group.

Additionally, the Exploding Kittens – The Game features classic gameplay where players draw cards while hoping to avoid catastrophic consequences. The mobile game will introduce new cards, Radar and Flip Flop, which coincide with the new animated series. The game will be available to Netflix subscribers as the streaming giant ventures further into offering video games as a part of the subscription service. If you’re wondering why Netflix fees keep going up, this is part of the reason.

I love the Exploding Kittens card game and am curious about the forthcoming animated series. I’m also interested in checking out the video game version of Exploding Kittens, seeing as we’re already paying for the option to play it.
