Here’s an interesting concept: Horror movies as art! (end sarcasm tag)
Sersiously though, there is art in horror, despite what some critics say. Besides stuff like special effects makeup or costumes designed by Giger, there’s the crafting of fear and tension. To me, that’s as artistic as writing Shakespeare.
FAB Press, which has made a name for itself by portraying horror films as art in it’s books, is set to release another one of their gems. We Are Going to Eat You!: The Complete History of Cannibal Cinema, was written by Stephen R. Bissette and will be published by FAB in July of next year. A truncated version of this piece appeared in Chas Balun’s The Deep Red Horror Handbook, and an older version of the text has been available from Bissette himself since 1990. With the publication signing by FAB, Bissette will be going back and retooling the earlier version and updating/extending it to include cannibal films and real-life occurrences that have transpired since then.
