Director Adam Wingard Exits Paramount’s Face/Off Sequel

Paramount Pictures is seeking another director to helm the planned sequel to the classic 1990s action film Face/Off after losing filmmaker Adam Wingard. The director of The Blair Witch and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire left the project last summer, with both Wingard and Paramount mutually parting ways. Face/Off 2 now has an “open status” at the studio, with other filmmakers able to pitch their ideas for a follow-up to John Woo’s over-the-top action film starring Nicolas Cage and John Travolta.

Rumblings about a Face/Off remake began in 2019. Neil Moritz was in line to produce with Oren Uziel writing the script. In 2021, Adam Wingard signed on to helm the project, based on a screenplay he co-wrote with Simon Barrett.

Wingard seemed excited about his Face/Off sequel

“I don’t want to get too much into the weeds on the Face/Off thing, but yeah, I think the script is really fucking awesome,” Wingard said about his Face/Off 2 project in a 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “It is one of those things where you read it, and you’re like, ‘Oh, shit! This is a true sequel to Face/Off that I could have never dreamed of.'”

Who else will eat a peach for hours?

It’s a shame we’re unlikely to see Wingard’s Face/Off sequel, given his excitement for the project. That said, I’m not shouting the sequels’ chances from the rooftops yet on account of that Cage and Travolta have yet to sign on. Getting the duo back together remains a priority for Paramount, but no deals are currently in place. With Wingard exiting, I wonder if he’s taking his script with him. Does Paramount need to find another screenplay in addition to someone to helm the camera? Woof.

Wingard’s next film sounds intense

As for Wingard, his next project is an action horror thriller titled Onslaught. The film stars Adria Arjona (Blink Twice, Andor), Rebecca Hall (The Prestige, The Town), Dan Stevens (Legion, Cuckoo), Michael Biehn (Aliens, The Terminator), Reginald Vel Johnson (Die Hard, Family Matters), and Drew Starkey (The Hate U Give, Outer Banks). The story focuses on a mother living in a trailer park who uses her skills to protect her loved ones from a threat that escaped a secret military base, while mercenaries try to contain it.
