Ever since we got our first glimpse at Matthew McConaughey in his newly emaciated state, the curiosity for what would push him to go that route has been piqued. Turns out, McConnaughey went to extremes to play real-life figure, Ron Woodroof, a Texas man diagnosed with HIV in the mid 80’s who starts trafficking alternative treatments for fellow afflicted individuals, establishing the DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, which serves as the film’s title. Co-starring a heavily transformed Jared Leto, Jennifer Garner, Steve Zahn, Griffin Dunne, and Dennis O’Hare, ET has a sneak peek of the film’s full trailer, which you can see below.

Take a look:

Here’s the synopsis:

In this fact-based drama, Matthew McConaughey portrays real-life Texas electrician Ron Woodroof, an ordinary man who found himself in a life-or-death battle with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies. In 1985, Ron was blindsided with an HIV diagnosis and given 30 days to live. With medications still restricted in the US and the country still divided over how to combat the virus, Ron procured non-toxic alternative treatments from all over the world through both legal and illegal means. To avoid government sanctions against selling non-approved medicines and supplements, Ron established a “buyers club” for fellow HIV-positive people, giving them access to his supplies.

McConaughey looks to be entering Oscar territory with this one and with the added punch of starring in Martin Scorsese‘s THE WOLF OF WALL STREET this fall (not to mention the lead in Christopher Nolan‘s INTERSTELLAR), the actor has made a steady move back into the big leagues after dropping in and out of the limelight throughout the years. Equally impressive is Leto, who has gone against the grain of the “pretty boy leading man” roles that one would pigeon hole him in and continues to impress with his selection of off the grid parts.

DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, opens on December 6, 2013.
